FOSSILS OF ARKANSAS TEXAS

These pics are different sites hunted on Sunday and some of the fossils found there.

Lance checking out one of the formations.

This pecten has 2 different shells on either side.

This one has the pattern of a possible trace fossil but I am not sure.

Pic by Lance.

Another formation that was a good fossil producer

Those boulders behind Lance are fossil filled.

Ok, this was my first drive by fossil hunt. Lance spotted it as we passed by it. It was coming out of the side of the road. :-) Thanks Lance!

The following were taken in the north Fort Worth area. My favorite find was an echinoid. The site was loaded with oysters, bi-valves and quite a few heart urchins and ammonite pieces. These fossils are in the Goodland formation which makes them about 103 million years ago (mya).

The echinoid on the left, I will get an ID on.

Snails (gastropods) are on the left (above).  Center is a razor clam and to the right are bivalves

August 18th was the Dallas Paleo Society's Oliver Creek hunt. Wish I would have gotten pics of everyone's finds. Unfortunately, my finds are packed away and I won't have time to take them for awhile.

Some of Polly's finds from the creek.

This tooth is only a 16th of an inch and she found it on the Jackson, Ms. trip.

Lance spots a heart clam in the matrix and Lance with a very nice Engonoceras ammonite

Later Lance, Keith, the man in the red shirt [Mike Murphy] and I, hunted some area not far away.
The site below had shark teeth, and I found some nice denture clams.

The area above is where I found a beautiful small echinoid. I am uncertain of the species. Will get a picture at a later time.
More hunt pics here: Part 1  Part 2

The next day we hit some other cretaceous sites. I found quite a few fossils with pics later.

That is the spot that he found a fancy echinoid.

This last pic is under a highway and many small, detailed fossils were found there. I believe the site is the Weno formation.

On Sat August 11th, in over 100 degrees, Lance and I hit some of his cretaceous spots in the DFW area of Texas.
Some of these pics, you can click on for the larger version.
The first pictures are of some of the cretaceous sites and some of the fossils found there.

A good site for shark teeth and bone.

A good echinoid spot and other fossils.  Just some of the fossils are pictured.

On Sunday August 12th we hunted Permian [Pennsylvanian Period] sites and got permission to hunt on private property where the fossils were numerous. We also went to Mineral Wells, and several other locations.

The next are Permian [Pennsylvanian Period] fossil sites and fossils. Thanks to Lance for some of the pics.

Below, is the largest brachiopod that I have ever found.  Mineral Wells pit and a road cut.

Wilson Clay Pit & Hunts near DFW, Tx

June 9th, 2007 - Wilson's Clay pit is a huge area with the fossils being from the Harpersville Formation and all Permian in age. Located in Coleman County, TX.

Don and Lance heading in the pit ( above).

Brian checking out  a spot.

Petalodus Shark Teeth (above)

Fusulinids commonly called "rice fossils"

Some of Lance's finds at the pit (below). First pic is teeth in situ. Teeth found at 11:10.. _:-)

The next areas are Cretaceous in age...one of my favorites. Some of the sites we hunted and pics of some of the fossils found there.  [North of Fort Worth]

Same [type of] ammonite that Lance found..

[Midlothian, TX.]

[North Fort Worth]

The tooth plate is a pycnodont fish. Pic shows location it was found.  Close up of the tooth plate that he found there.

(Below) large fish vert Lance found right off the highway [south of Mansfield].

Texas Hunts

Went to a hunt over the weekend in Texas, Fort Worth surrounding areas.  The formations involved at the different sites were the Goodland, the Austin Chalk contact with the Eagle Ford formation, and Pawpaw.

This first pics are of the Goodland formation with Lance checking out the surface. The site was fossil rich.

Fossils from the combined trips. The top clams are lima wacoensis, a first for me. Also pictured are the giant gastropods, echinoids, various clams, and partial ammonites. Also, 2 of my favorite shark teeth. They are the first I have of that coloring.

The ammonite (most likely, Engonoceras serpintinum) and the light colored shark tooth (Cretalamna app.) are from the Pawpaw formation. Thanks to Lance for the ID's.

The heart urchins (echinoids) at the Goodland formation

Easter Weekend Hunts

Saturday, a group of us (Adam, Polly, Lance, Dean, Don, Jane and I hunted a Coppell site known for crabs. I found  my first Texas crab (with a little help..ok, a lot of help). Everyone found a crab with Polly finding the killer of the group. Pictured is  mine.

Other fossils found there which may be a rudist (2 views)
